Job Description

CNC Machining Technician II
Bond Optics – Lebanon, NH
Full-Time | 2nd Shift (Mon–Fri, 3:00 PM–11:30 PM)

Position Summary

Bond Optics is seeking an experienced CNC Machining Technician II to independently set up, operate, and optimize CNC machining centers for precision operations on optical and ceramic components used in demanding defense, aerospace, and industrial applications.
This role is ideal for a skilled CNC machinist who can work with non-metallic materials (glass, ceramics, crystalline substrates), interpret drawings, write and edit G-code programs, troubleshoot process issues, and maintain tight dimensional tolerances. The CNC Machining Technician II also mentors Technician I personnel and contributes to process improvement.
Equipment Scope: This role operates conventional CNC machining centers (HAAS, Mori Seiki, or equivalent) configured for glass and ceramic material processing. This is not a traditional metal-cutting machining position.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Independently set up, operate, and optimize CNC machining centers (HAAS, Mori Seiki, or equivalent) for precision operations on glass, ceramic, and crystalline substrates including:
    • Edging and diameter generation to tight tolerances
    • Beveling, chamfering, and edge profiling
    • Profile machining, contouring, and specialty material removal operations
  • Select, mount, and qualify tooling (diamond grinding wheels, cutting tools, fixtures) appropriate for the material and operation.
  • Read and interpret machining drawings, optical drawings, work travelers (manufacturing routing documents), and specifications.
  • Write, edit, and verify G-code programs; make in-process program adjustments to optimize cycle time, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform in-process and final dimensional inspection using precision metrology tools including:
    • Micrometers, calipers, and electronic/dial indicators
    • Optical comparators
    • Height gauges and bore gauges
    • Surface finish gauges and edge inspection tools
  • Monitor tool wear, chipping, and breakage; manage tool life and replacement schedules.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues including chatter, runout, thermal drift, chipping, and breakage on brittle substrates; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain process records, job logs, labels, and traceability documentation using shop-floor systems.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance including coolant management, way lubrication, spindle checks, and fixture upkeep; support preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Work with supervisors, quality, and engineering to resolve process or quality issues and support new part introduction.
  • Mentor and train CNC Machining Technician I personnel on setup standards, safe machine operation, workmanship expectations, and documentation practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to improve yield, cycle time, tool life, and process repeatability.

Qualifications

Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience, preferably with non-metallic materials (glass, ceramics, or similar brittle substrates).
  • Proficiency in CNC machine setup, operation, and basic troubleshooting on HAAS, Mori Seiki, or equivalent machining centers.
  • Working knowledge of G-code programming, including the ability to write, read, edit, and verify programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret machining drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Proficient shop math skills including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, ratios, and decimal arithmetic.
  • Strong skills in dimensional measurement using precision inspection tools.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and process consistency.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred:
  • Experience machining optical glass, technical ceramics, or crystalline materials.
  • Experience with diamond tooling selection and management for brittle material machining.
  • Familiarity with coolant systems, filtration, and waste management for glass/ceramic machining.
  • Experience with CAM software for toolpath generation.
  • Familiarity with shop-floor software, ERP/MRP systems, and production data systems.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, semiconductor, or other high-spec manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles.

What You Can Expect

  • Meaningful work producing precision optical and ceramic components for defense, aerospace, and advanced technology programs.
  • A team-oriented shop with opportunities to grow into senior technical or leadership roles.
  • Access to modern CNC machining centers and precision metrology tools.
  • A company that values craftsmanship, process discipline, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration with engineering and quality teams on process development and new part introduction.

Physical / Work Environment

  • Standing for extended periods; frequent hands-on machine setup, operation, and part handling.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Use of hands and fingers to handle, feel, or manipulate delicate optical and ceramic components, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed in a controlled manufacturing environment; noise level is generally moderate. Use of coolants, cutting fluids, and standard machine shop PPE is required.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation range: $26.00–$33.00/hour, depending on experience, plus 10% shift differential. Bond Optics offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
