Labor Organizer

Based in the Hudson Valley, NY
(Dutchess, Orange, or Ulster County)

Location: The position will be based in the Hudson Valley (Dutchess, Orange, or Ulster County). We may be able to offer a stipend to cover relocation expenses.

Reports to: Labor Organizing Manager

Type of position: Full-time, 40 hours, exempt, bargaining unit position

Compensation: The salary range is $61,000 – $66,000 depending on the experience and skills of the candidate.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Engage Amazon workers, For the Many members, existing union members, and other community members to develop and execute campaigns to build worker power in the logistics industry in the Hudson Valley.
  • Attend key meetings - group worker meetings, scheduled 1-1 worker meetings, and internal meetings 
  • Complete 1-1 follow up with workers about organizing assignments 
  • Complete outreach to map, clear, and integrate new workers into the organizing, including parking lot visits to connect with workers at facilities, and including house visits, doorknocking and phonebanking
  • Facilitate group worker meetings - including via prepping, balancing engagement, addressing challenging dynamics, and keeping the group focused on purpose and goals 
  • Build authentic and strong relationships and trust with key worker leaders
  • Delegate and following up on assignments to individual worker leaders, and providing support and accountability to them 

Other duties & responsibilities

  • Meet with supervisor on a regular basis
  • Participate in weekly staff and coordination meetings as needed
  • Participate in other organizational activities, including recruiting volunteers and soliciting donors from your existing social networks, supporting organizing efforts through phonebanking, canvassing, and facilitation, attending staff retreats, and engaging with staff culture building

Work requirements

  • In-person work. We expect this organizer to constantly be meeting with workers in their workplaces or elsewhere in the field, and at our offices. This position is based in our Newburgh office.
  • Evening & weekend hours. Depending on the needs of the work, this position will be expected to work irregular hours, including on nights, weekends, and holidays. We provide flexible scheduling and comp time to ensure sustainability in the position. 
  • Ability to drive. Must have a driver's license, and daily access to a working car with current car insurance, and be willing to travel across the Hudson Valley regularly. 
  • Comfortable walking multiple miles per day. We expect this organizer to spend multiple hours per week on outreach, which will include being on your feet for multiple hours at a time.
